Egg prices are high and there are shortages in some areas because of the bird flu. Now the head of Michigan’s largest egg producer has an idea how to stop its spread.
The CEO of Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch in Saranac, Greg Herbruck, lost 6.5 million chickens to bird flu last year. He says the government should allow chickens to be vaccinated against the bird flu.
“We need a different strategy,” Herbruck said. “There are other tools we can use, vaccine being one, and the economics are huge. You know, the government has spent almost $2 billion in the last couple of years paying farmers to kill their animals.”
Herbruck says other countries are using a vaccine against bird flu and chickens here are already receiving vaccines for other things. He says they’re rebuilding their flock but says it’s scary because they could be hit by bird flu again.
