MLB – Alex Bregman and Red Sox agree to $120 million, 3-year contract, AP source says
Alex Bregman and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a $120 million, three-year contract, a person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical. Bregman can opt out after the 2026 and 2027 seasons to become a free agent again. He might need to shift from third base to second with the Red Sox, who already have All-Star slugger Rafael Devers at the hot corner. A two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion during nine years with Houston, the 30-year-old Bregman hit .260 with 26 homers and 75 RBIs in 2024, the final season of a $100 million, five-year contract. He also won his first Gold Glove.
MLB – Relief pitcher John Brebbia agrees to $2.75 million, 1-year contract with Detroit
Relief pitcher John Brebbia and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract, a deal that could be worth up to $14.25 million over two seasons. A 34-year-old right-hander, Brebbia gets a $2.25 million salary this year as part of a deal that includes a $4 million team option for 2027 with a $500,000 buyout. The deal includes an escalator and performance bonuses. Brebbia began last season with the Chicago White Sox and was acquired by Atlanta on Aug. 31. He was 0-6 with a 6.28 ERA in 54 relief appearances.
MLB – Tigers expect RHP Alex Cobb to miss start of season with hip injury
The Detroit Tigers are expecting Alex Cobb to miss the start of the season. The team’s injury report at the start of spring training Wednesday included Cobb, who had an injection last week to treat hip inflammation that developed as the right-hander was throwing. Cobb has had hip surgery twice. He signed a $15 million, one-year contract two months ago. The Tigers added him to join a rotation led by AL Triple Crown and CY Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and recently signed Jack Flaherty. Cobb was an All-Star with the San Francisco Giants in 2023.
MLB – Baseball welcomes another season, with most pitchers and catchers reporting
There’s a new No. 2 in the New York Yankees’ rotation behind Gerrit Cole. A familiar face is getting a fresh start leading the Cincinnati Reds. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani & Co. are preparing title defense. There was plenty to see as baseball returned for most big league clubs, with pitchers and catchers working out at sites across Arizona and Florida. The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers got an early start ahead of their opening series in Tokyo on March 18 and 19, and a few clubs won’t get going until Thursday.
NCAAFB – Ohio State is hiring former Lions coach Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator
A person familiar with the situation says that Ohio State is hiring former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement had not been announced. Coming off the national championship, Ohio State coach Ryan Day agreed in principle last year to a seven-year contract valued at $12.5 million per year. Day hired Patricia to fill the void left by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles leaving for the same job at Penn State. The 50-year-old Patricia was let go by the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago.
Trump NIL order has small legal impact, to some ‘it’s putting women’s sports back 25 years’
The U.S. Education Department is scrapping a policy from the Biden administration that threatened to upend colleges’ plans to pay athletes for their name, image and likeness by making those payments subject to federal Title IX rules. President Donald Trump’s education officials announced the change Wednesday, saying the policy from former President Joe Biden’s final days in office had no legal basis under Title IX, the 1972 law forbidding sex discrimination in education. A Jan. 16 memo from the Biden administration told universities that NIL payments must be treated the same as athletic financial aid such as scholarships.
NCAA – NCAA committee recommends flag football as emerging sport for women
The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics has recommended that Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation to add flag football to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program. The recommendation gives all three divisions an opportunity to sponsor legislation that would move the sport through NCAA governance structures. A sport must have at least 40 schools sponsoring the sport at the varsity level to be considered for championship status. There are 14 states that have sanctioned girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. NFL FLAG says almost a half million girls ages 6 to 17 played in 2023.
