The Michigan High School Athletics Association says it will not comply — for now — with an executive order signed by President Trump, banning transgender girls from girls sports. There is now a bill in the state House that would force the association to do so.
Republican state Representative Jason Woolford of Howell introduced the legislation. He was asked if this something he hears about a lot from constituents.
“100%, we saw it in the election,” Woolford said. “You look at the breakdown of the electoral vote, the popular vote, the people have spoken in America and they’re sick of government overreach. They’re sick of over taxation and they’re sick of the government getting involved in the lives of our children and putting them at risk.”
Woolford says it’s about protecting girls.
Just two waivers were approved this school year for transgender girls to compete in girls sports among the roughly 175,000 athletes, according to the MHSAA.
