There are two competing plans to fix Michigan’s roads. One is from House Republicans who want to find room in the budget through cuts. The other, introduced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, includes taxing tech companies and increasing the gas tax. Both are looking to spend roughly the same amount of money.
Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt says tax and spend isn’t going to work in the long term, and that we’ll see soon enough the consequences of neglecting road funding.
“Just give it another month and those potholes are just going to be really accumulating, especially on these local roads,” Nesbitt said. “So enough of the excuses. I’m always ready to work with anybody and sit down with anybody to find solutions. Let’s get to work and let’s get it done.”
Nesbitt says the way to fix the roads is through cutting wasteful government spending. Either way, state lawmakers will have to approve any funding plans.
