NBA -Victor Wembanyama is an All-Star, 1 of 6 1st-time selections
NBA coaches are obviously convinced: Victor Wembanyama is one of the league’s very best players. The San Antonio star and reigning rookie of the year is an All-Star for the first time, one of the 14 players announced Thursday night as members of the reserve pool for the Feb. 16 event in San Francisco. Wembanyama becomes only the fourth Spurs player to make the All-Star Game in his first or second season. The others were Alvin Robertson in 1986, David Robinson in both 1990 and 1991, and Tim Duncan in 1998.  There were seven players picked Thursday from each conference. From the Eastern Conference: Boston’s Jaylen Brown, Indiana’s Pascal Siakam, Cleveland’s Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard — last year’s All-Star MVP — and Miami’s Tyler Herro. From the West: Wembanyama, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Clippers’ James Harden, Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr., Houston’s Alperen Sengun and Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams.

NFL- National Football League – Pro Bowl Weekend
Sunday
Pro Bowl Games – Camping World Stadium, Orlando, FL
NFC vs. AFC, 3:00 p.m.

NFL – Lions QB Jared Goff delivers near-perfect performance to open the Pro Bowl Games
Detroit quarterback Jared Goff delivered a near-perfect performance in “passing the test” and helped the NFC take a 14-7 lead over the AFC during the opening night of the Pro Bowl Games. Goff showed off his passing acumen by hitting every target and then some in 1 minute, 30 seconds. He racked up 44 points for the NFC, five more than teammate Sam Darnold of Minnesota. Goff, Darnold and Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield easily beat the AFC team of QBs comprised of Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, New England’s Drake Maye and Pittsburgh’s Russell Wilson. The passing game was the highlight of the six events on opening night.

NFL – NFL will look into allegations by massage therapists about Justin Tucker’s behavior
An NFL spokesman says the league will look into allegations that Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker behaved inappropriately toward massage therapists at four spas and wellness centers in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Banner detailed the accusations in a lengthy report Thursday. The paper said it spoke to six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with Tucker from 2012 to 2016. Several therapists said they ended Tucker’s sessions early or refused to work on him again, and management from two spas said they banned him from returning. Tucker posted a statement on social media calling the allegations about him in the story “unequivocally false.”

NFL – Coordinators start work under coach Ben Johnson trying to revitalize a 5-12 team
The coordinators hired by Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson enter their new jobs with vastly different amounts of coaching experience. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has had two stints as an NFL head coach while new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is the youngest coordinator in the league. After working with the 28-year-old Doyle in New Orleans for four years, Allen views him as the kind of up-and-comer who can help energize Johnson’s offense. Experience is definitely not a concern for the Bears with their defensive coordinator after Allen was the Saints head coach from 2022-24 and Raiders coach from 2012-14, as well as an NFL defensive coordinator for eight years.

14 from figure skating community killed in plane crash, six of them from Boston club
Two young figure skaters, two of their parents and two highly-regarded Russian figure skating coaches were among those killed after an American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter and crashed into the frigid waters of the Potomac River. Doug Zeghibe, the chief executive at the Skating Club of Boston, said Thursday that skaters Jinna Han and Spencer Lane were among those killed, along with coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. U.S. Figure Skating previously confirmed that several skaters, coaches and family members were on the commercial flight after attending a development camp that followed the national championships, which wrapped up Sunday in Wichita, Kansas.

Boxing – Shields chooses to fight in hometown of Flint, turning down NY, LV, and Detroit
Claressa Shields chose to fight in her hometown over opportunities to be the headliner on a boxing card in New York, Las Vegas or Detroit. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-division champion is facing top-ranked contender Danielle Perkins for the undisputed heavyweight title on Sunday night in Flint, Michigan. Shields is putting the spotlight on Flint just as she did in the movie “The Fire Inside,” that was released in December. The 29-year-old Shields is 15-0 with three knockouts. The 42-year-old Perkins is a former St. John’s basketball player with a 5-0 record.

WNBA – Clark and Fever will play exhibition against Brazilian National Team at Iowa
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will be playing the Brazilian National Team this WNBA preseason at the University of Iowa. The Fever announced the addition to their preseason schedule Thursday. The game on May 4 will allow Clark to play as a pro at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where she starred in college on her way to becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA last spring. Iowa is retiring Clark’s No. 22 on Sunday in honor of her finishing her college career as the all-time leading men’s or women’s scorer in NCAA Division I history.

Golf – McIlroy and Lowry come up aces, Henley takes Pebble Beach lead
Scottie Scheffler looked every bit like the No. 1 player in the world even if he didn’t make a hole-in-one during the exciting start to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Scheffler opened with a 67 in his first tournament of the year since puncturing his right hand over Christmas making ravioli. The thrills belonged to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. They each made a hole-in-one on different courses and each shot 66. The lead belonged to Russell Henley. He shot 64 at Spyglass Hill on what might be the last day of dry weather. Jordan Spieth shot 70 in his return from wrist surgery.

MLB – Scherzer agrees to a $15.5 million, 1-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays
Max Scherzer is joining the Toronto Blue Jays, agreeing to a 15.5 million, one-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced and was pending a physical. The 40-year-old Scherzer was limited to nine starts with Texas last year, going 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. The three-time Cy Young Award winner joins a rotation that is fronted by Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt.
