The Big Three automakers in Michigan have been working for years to improve fuel economy, and a new Consumer Reports survey reveals fuel efficiency is high on Americans’ priority list.

The survey shows 96% of American drivers consider fuel economy when choosing a vehicle, with 66% calling it very or extremely important. It also remains the top feature they believe needs improvement, a trend seen in surveys over the past nine years.

Consumer Reports policy analyst Chris Harto shared other results of the survey.

Only 27% of Americans said that automakers care about lowering fuel costs for their customers,” Harto said. “On the other hand, almost two-thirds of Americans, 64%, agree that the U.S. government should continue to increase fuel economy standards.”

In November of 2021, the Big Three lagged in fuel economy due to their focus on trucks and SUVs, but they’re now investing in hybrids and electric vehicles to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The average fuel economy of new U.S. vehicles is currently around 28 miles per gallon, well below the 50 mpg target for 2025.

More results from the survey showed that drivers also want improvements in purchase price, maintenance costs, infotainment systems and cargo space.
