The frigid weather will be with us in Southwest Michigan for a couple of days, and some organizations are making themselves available as warming centers.

The Salvation Army in Benton Harbor opened its chapel on Monday to give people a place to warm up. Salvation Army Lieutenant the men’s shelter has a capacity of 38, and 30 stayed there Sunday night.

“You get a warm dinner and you get a warm breakfast when you leave,” Bledsoe said. “You get a hot shower. If you need your clothes washed, we wash your clothes. We have board games. You can watch TV. We try to make a comfortable space for the guys who’s coming in for the program.”

Through 5 p.m. Monday, Bledsoe said people could come in and warm up. The same will apply Tuesday as the Salvation Army will be available as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The community is welcome to make donations to help the Salvation Army continue its mission.

“We’re taking hats, gloves, socks, anybody want to donate food. We’ve taken all those things and we’re using it specifically either for the shelter or for the warm center.”

The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen was closed Monday because of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but Bledsoe said they were still serving people. The soup kitchen will be back open Tuesday.

Meanwhile, women looking for a place to stay can go to Emergency Shelter Services. In South Haven, the Bronson Wellness Center on Bailey Avenue has also opened as a warming center. Another place to go if you need to warm up is your local library.
