A Benton Harbor man has been sentenced to 100 months in prison in a federal gun case.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten says 47-year-old Lamon Tirell Turner was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, with a record of several prior convictions that included assault, unarmed robbery, domestic violence, and assault on a police officer.

Totten says Turner was arrested when police executed a search warrant at an apartment where Turner was staying and found a gun hidden under a couch, next to where Turner was sleeping. Subsequent testing found Turner’s DNA on the gun.

Additionally, Totten says the recovered firearm was determined to be the last one recovered of 123 firearms stolen during a 2023 robbery of Dunham’s Sports in Benton Harbor. He says with this recovery, police have now successfully located all firearms taken in that robbery.

The conviction of Turner comes as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaboration of federal, state, and local police seeking to crack down on violent crime. Totten says his office is “committed to stopping the proliferation of illegal guns flooding our communities,” adding it will use all available tools to do so.
