The FDA is banning an additive that is used in a lot of of junk food.

Red Dye 3 will no longer be allowed in food products here in the United States. The dye gives foods like icing and candies their red color.

Diane Cress is a registered dietician and associate professor Wayne State University and says the FDA already has extremely strict regulations.

The FDA works from a risk-based strategy that says, ‘Well, there’s no risk at these levels, so it’s okay,’” Cress said. “But there’s an intolerance for that argument from some groups, and they say, ‘Well, if there’s any risk at all, even if it’s in only male mice, we should ban it from the food supply.’”

Cress says testing on animals and people has shown Red Dye 3 causes no harmful side effects, outside of the mentioned male mice.

All food companies hoping to sell their products in the U.S. now have two years to remove the dye.
