The city of St. Joseph is once again seeking a state grant to improve the Pleasant Street Plaza.

Speaking at this week’s meeting of the St. Joseph City Commission, City Manager Emily Hackworth said the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has opened a third round of funding in its Revitalization and Placemaking Program, giving St. Joe another opportunity to apply for funding after it was turned down last year. She said the city is eying major improvements to the plaza.

The project is currently estimated at $1.2 million,” Hackworth said. “Applicants for the RAP grant must have a minimum request of $500,000 and a maximum of the lesser of $1 million, or 50% of eligible costs, which makes Pleasant Street Plaza a really good fit.”

The city would seek a grant of $600,000, meaning its own contribution to the project, if the grant is approved, would be $600,000. The project would have to be finished by June 30, 2027.

Hackworth told us back in June the city’s plans for the plaza near Main Street and Court Street could include better pedestrian access, public seating, tables, and wider sidewalks. Located in the area are Silver Harbor Brewing Company and 221 Main.

On the Downtown Development Authority’s recommendation, commissioners Monday authorized city staff to apply for the grant.
