The U.S. House has approved legislation seeking to ban transgender athletes from competing in school sports leagues that receive federal funding.

Congressman Tim Walberg says this was the first piece of legislation to come through the House Education and Labor Committee since he became its chair.

I recently voted for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to prohibit federal funds for organizations that permit a person whose sex is male to participate in school athletic programs that are designated for females,” Walberg said.

Walberg says it was a bit of “common sense” legislation.

The House approved the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act on a vote of 218 to 206 Tuesday. Walberg says he’s committed to ensuring an equal playing field for high school and college athletes of all kinds.
