The St. Joseph Youth Sports Foundation is still working to raise funds for its new sports complex.

President of the foundation Nicole Schmitt tells us they have raised 70% of their phase 1 goal, but are currently at an impasse.

“We can’t use those dollars that we have for general construction,” Schmitt says. “What our delay is right now, is that we don’t have just general construction money or just,  general money that’s not labeled for something specific.”

Schmitt says despite the holdup, the plan to build the complex is still intact and hopefully start with a groundbreaking this spring.

“We still feel like the items that we’ve chosen and selected in our drawings are still accurate and still something that the community needs,” Schmitt says. “We really don’t want to make any changes. We’re kind of regrouping right now on how we want to go about our strategy for fundraising. So it’s kind of more just like a regrouping for our fundraising right now.”

The proposed 40-acre state of the art sports complex is planned to be located at Maiden Lane Road and Hollywood Road in St. Joseph Township, across from the YMCA. The complex will feature baseball and softball fields, football game and practice fields, indoor batting cages, a splash pad and more.
