Are you eating a lot of ultra processed foods? That can increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a study of more than 300,000 people by University College London.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan spokesperson Shanthi Appelo says examples of ultra-processed foods are sugary drinks, artificially sweetened drinks, packaged snacks, and frozen dinners.

The other category of foods are ultra-processed meat,” Appelo said. “Bacon, sausage, lunch meat. This isn’t news. This is something that we’ve seen over and over again, but they’re going to have things like nitrites, unhealthy fats, basically things that have been linked to insulin resistance, which are associated with type 2 diabetes.”

Apello recommends replacing some of these foods with healthy alternatives and making exercise a part of your routine.
