The Mega Millions jackpot is nearly $1 billion. Tonight’s estimated jackpot is currently at $970 million. The Michigan Lottery’s Jake Harris says if won at that level, it would be the largest prize ever won in December.

“I think anytime we have a jackpot that’s approaching a billion dollars, you’re going to have players taking notice, whether they play regularly or they just play occasionally,” Harris said. “A billion dollars is a lot of money to be up for grabs in a jackpot, but of course, lottery tickets are very popular during the holiday season. They make great gifts for the adults on your list. So we do see strong sales during the holidays with or without a huge jackpot, but this will certainly help increase sales.”

If a winner took the cash option, they’d walk home with more than $439 million. The odds of that happening are one in more than 350 million.
