A federal lawsuit against the University of Michigan says the school’s leaders violated the constitutional rights of students.

The lawsuit claims President Santa Ono, the university’s Board of Regents, and other groups violated the free speech, due process, and equal protection rights of students. The suit was filed on behalf of a Palestinian Group, many of whom protested against the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Attorney John Philo says the group believes it’s been singled out for their beliefs.

Every event that they’ve had, there’ve been counter protesters who have been disruptive or more disruptive,” Philo said. “No counter protester has gone through those disciplinary hearings to our knowledge, none of the organizations that organized the counter protests have gone through it, and for us, what we’re seeking is balance.”

The university says the claims against it have no merit.
