St. Joseph residents are being advised that part of Broad Street will be closed for a week in January.
St. Joe City Engineer Tim Zebell tells us Broad Street in the area of the Public Works Building, roughly near Church Street and Wayne Street, will be shut down from January 13 to January 20. It’s for a sewer project.
“The project involves installation of a larger, what we call an underflow pipe,” Zebell said. “So the current pipe is 12 inches in diameter, and we’re going to increase the pipe to 24 inches in diameter. That carries the sewer from about two-thirds of the city through the central ravine interceptor.”
Zebell says the road closure will only affect a small area.
“Broad Street will be closed. It’s only over a very short distance, maybe 40, 50 feet in length, just south or east. It’s kind of in an angle there, near the Public Works entrance.”
Access to the homes and businesses nearby will remain available. Zebell says through traffic will have a detour.
This project lays the groundwork for the installation of a large tank that will improve the sewer system. Zebell says the current sewer project is a $6.5 million effort being funded with a state loan, while the eventual storage tank project will be $20 million.
