NFL – National Football League – Week 14
Last Night
San Francisco 49ers 38, Chicago Bears 13

49ers 38, Bears 13 – 49ers beat the Bears 38-13 to spoil Brown’s debut
Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes and the San Francisco 49ers bounced back from two blowout losses to beat Chicago 38-13 and spoil interim coach Thomas Brown’s debut for the Bears. The 49ers had been outscored by 53 points the past two weeks in losses at Green Bay and Buffalo that left their playoff hopes teetering. But San Francisco delivered a performance more reminiscent of a year ago when the Niners went to the Super Bowl. The Bears lost their seventh straight and didn’t get an emotional boost from the first in-season firing of a head coach in franchise history.

NCAAFB – College Football Playoff’s first 12-team bracket is set with Oregon No. 1
SMU captured the last open spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, bumping Alabama to land in a bracket that placed undefeated Oregon at No. 1. The selection committee preferred the Mustangs, losers of a heartbreaker in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, who had a far less difficult schedule than Alabama of the SEC but one fewer loss. The inaugural 12-team bracket marks a new era for college football, though the Alabama-SMU debate made clear there is no perfect formula. The tournament starts Dec. 20-21 with four first-round games. It concludes Jan. 20 with the national title game in Atlanta.

The Indiana and Notre Dame campuses are separated by 200 miles but their football teams haven’t met since 1991. Georgia has played Notre Dame three times and all were high-stakes games. The Bulldogs have never played Indiana.  The last time Notre Dame (11-1) and Indiana (11-1) played, Rick Mirer and Jerome Bettis led the Irish to a 49-27 win in South Bend on an 86-degree September afternoon 33 years ago. The temperature will be quite a bit cooler when the teams meet at Notre Dame Stadium in less than two weeks.

NCAAFB – Purdue hires UNLV’s Barry Odom as its next football coach
The Purdue Boilermakers have hired UNLV coach Barry Odom as their next football coach. Athletic director Mike Bobinski made the announcement Sunday. Odom led the Rebels to two straight Mountain West Conference championship games, but they lost both times to Boise State. Odom was 19-8 in two seasons with UNLV and went 25-25 in his previous head coaching stint at Missouri from 2016-19.

MLB – Juan Soto agrees to record $765 million, 15-year contract with Mets
A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that star outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets have agreed to a record $765 million, 15-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement, first reported by the New York Post, was subject to a successful physical. Soto’s deal is the largest and longest in Major League Baseball history, topping Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s $340 million, 14-year contract with San Diego. Soto’s deal does not include deferred money, the person said.

MLB – Dave Parker and Dick Allen elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame
Dave Parker and Dick Allen have been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame by the classic era committee. Parker received 14 of 16 votes and Allen got 13. A vote of 75% or more was needed for election. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27 along with players voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, whose balloting will be announced on Jan. 21. Nicknamed The Cobra, Parker hit .290 with 339 homers and 1,493 RBIs for Pittsburgh (1973-83), Cincinnati (1984-87), Oakland (1988-89), Milwaukee (1990), California (1991) and Toronto (1991). Since 2002, the Hall has made the decision on what team logo is used on a player’s cap. “I might have to split it up three ways,” Parker said. He won World Series titles in 1979 and ’89. He was the 1978 NL MVP, won the 1977 and ’78 NL batting titles, and was a seven-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove right fielder.
