Thanksgiving is here, and that means some of us will be drinking. With that in mind, Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit has a few reminders for people.

Heit tells us police will be watching out for drunk drivers, especially tonight.

The night before Thanksgiving, a lot of times people go out, so what we would ask is to make sure that you have a plan, to have a designated driver, and just be responsible and just understand that impaired driving across the country takes lives during these times, especially during the holiday season,” Heit said. “[We want] people to make good decisions and drive safely.”

Heit says it’s much easier to make plans for getting home safely before you start drinking.

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest times for drunk driving arrests, behind only New Year’s and the Fourth of July.

Heit also reminds drivers to slow down and ditch distractions when behind the wheel, especially this weekend when there will be heavy traffic out on the road.
