South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kathy Wagaman is retiring.

Wagaman announced her plans to the chamber board of directors last month, and her last day will be February 28. She tells us she’s seen a lot of positive changes in South Haven during her 13 years with the chamber.

Our community has really taken a lot of care into our recreation and our green space and and parks and the aesthetics of our beaches and walkways, and that’s wonderful,” Wagaman said.

Wagaman says she’s proud of the role the chamber has taken in community events, taking over the National Blueberry Festival, and for a time, the farmers market. She says moving forward, it’s important for the chamber to understand the needs and concerns of its members

We need to always be mindful of what keeps them up at night. What are they struggling with? Or what would help support them better? And I got to say that in the last few years, it’s been very challenging for all small businesses.”

Wagaman says the state has imposed many regulations on businesses with a major concern being the paid sick leave and minimum wage requirements that will take effect next year if the Legislature doesn’t stop them.

After stepping down, Wagaman plans to do more with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, serving as a part-time captain on an 80-foot vessel in Saugatuck. Also, she says her RV is ready to go for some travelling.
