Never before have people been subjected to so much misinformation, thanks to social media.

That’s the message from CNET Editor at Large Connie Guglielmo, who says social media companies like X and TikTok need to do a better job of filtering nonsense.

Anything can be sent out and anything can be filtered with no balance or discussion about the harm it can cause,” Guglielmo said. “That is why this is such a contentious issue. And we don’t have those filters in place.”

Guglielmo urges people to check their sources before reposting something on social media. She says a good place to start is the non-profit News Literacy Project with more information at NewsLit.org.
