City leaders in Benton Harbor are waiting for an update on the status of Dial a Ride’s insurance.
We reported in late September the mass transit service was dropped by its insurance carrier for a variety of reasons. That left the Dial a Ride Board and TCATA scrambling to find a new carrier.
Benton Harbor City Commissioner Ron Singleton tells us the search for a new insurer is ongoing and there are talks taking place about a contingency plan should the deadline of December 2 come and go with no new insurance arrangement made. One possible contingency would be using another transportation service in the city, possibly Berrien Bus.
Singleton says they may have to use “whatever is available,” although he doesn’t know quite what that would look like. For Berrien County to start offering Berrien Bus in the city of Benton Harbor, the city would have to formally make a request for that.
The Dial a Ride Board is expected to learn more about the latest developments when it meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
