A potential ballot proposal would grow Michigan’s bottle deposit law, allowing people to return them any place they’re sold.

State Senator Sean McCann introduced the proposal that would appear on the 2026 general election ballot. It would also expand the law to include plastic water bottles.

McCann says Michigan’s seeing a boost in littering, and this would help.

It originally started as a anti-littering initiative, largely, because people were tossing cans and bottles off on the sideways sides of the road,” MCCann said. “This is something we’re beginning to see again.”

Michigan’s bottle law was first approved by voters in a 1976 proposal.
