Buchanan City Commissioners are telling the public not to be alarmed by letters they may receive about lead mitigation efforts in the community.
At this week’s commission meeting, Mayor ProTem Mark Weedon said the city has been working to identify and replace old lead water service lines, just like communities all across the state. Some residents have reported receiving letters informing them their home may be connected to a lead line.
Weedon said this is an ongoing issue.
“It’s unfortunate the wording had to be what the wording was, but that was a state template letter that had to go out, but we’ve been very active in getting in front of it, getting on top of it, and replacing it when we find it,” Weedon said.
Cities across the state are being required to inspect water lines and replace them when they’re found to be made of lead. The line replacement work will continue until it’s finished and residents will be notified if their water is found to have high lead levels.
The notices sent out in Buchanan are similar to notices sent out in Benton Township and Dowagiac.
