MSU 96, Niagara 60 – Kohler’s career night sends Michigan State to 96-60 win over Niagara
Jaxon Kohler came off the bench to post career highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds and Michigan State warmed up for a meeting with top-ranked Kansas with a 96-60 victory over Niagara on Thursday night. Michigan State takes on the Jayhawks on Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Atlanta. Kohler was 8-of-12 shooting with the junior posting his second career double-double. Jase Richardson added 12 points, Tre Holloman and Frankie Fidler 11 each and Jaden Akins 10. Olumide Adelodun scored 13 points, Jahari Williamson 12 and Jhaylon Martinez 10 for the Purple Eagles.

WMU 86, DU 46 – Muntu scores 17 off the bench, Western Michigan defeats Davenport 86-46
Brandon Muntu helped lead Western Michigan past Davenport on Thursday night with 17 points off of the bench in an 86-46 victory.  Muntu went 5 of 10 from the field (5 for 8 from 3-point range) for the Broncos (1-1). Max Burton scored 13 points while finishing 6 of 7 from the floor and added seven rebounds. Javaughn Hannah went 5 of 8 from the field (2 for 4 from 3-point range) to finish with 13 points.  Jovan Tucker finished with 11 points for the Panthers. Dylan Smith added six points for Davenport. Matyas Vrabel also recorded six points.

SB 73, CMU 72 – O’Connor’s bucket gives Stony Brook win over Central Michigan 73-72
Collin O’Connor led Stony Brook with 16 points, including the game-winning layup with three seconds left, and the Seawolves took down Central Michigan 73-72 on Thursday night. 
O’Connor added six rebounds and three steals for the Seawolves (1-1). CJ Luster II scored 15 points while going 5 of 10 from the floor, including 3 for 8 from 3-point range, and 2 for 4 from the line and added four steals. Joseph Octave had 11 points and shot 4 of 14 from the field and 2 of 6 from the free-throw line. The Chippewas (1-1) were led by Jakobi Heady, who recorded 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Central Michigan also got 12 points, six assists and five steals from Anthony Pritchard. Ugnius Jarusevicius had 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Jake Oettinger stopped 25 shots for Dallas, only allowing a power-play goal from Tyler Bertuzzi midway through the third period. Steel scored with 8:54 left in the first period and assisted Seguin after sending a shot across the crease in front of Soderblom. Logan Stankoven added a empty-netter with 46 seconds left in the game.

Julius Randle had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, and Rudy Gobert finished with 21 points and nine boards. It was Chicago’s fourth consecutive loss. Nikola Vucevic scored 25 points for the Bulls on 11-for-15 shooting. Coby White had 24 points and eight assists.

The Ravens rallied from a 21-7 third-quarter deficit, overcoming a huge game from Cincinnati receiver Ja’Marr Chase. He finished with 11 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns, including a 5-yarder in the final minute to bring the Bengals within one. Cincinnati decided to go for 2 and the lead, and Joe Burrow’s pass for Tanner Hudson sailed high.

NFL – Cowboys QB Prescott has a hamstring tear and surgery is an option, AP source says
A person with knowledge of the situation says Dak Prescott’s injured hamstring is partially torn away from the bone and surgery for the star quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys is possible. The injury is known as a partial avulsion and is likely to lead to an absence longer than the minimum of four games that would be required by putting Prescott on injured reserve. Former Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith missed 13 games two years after sustaining what is called a full avulsion in training camp. The complete tear of the hamstring off the bone requires surgery.

NFL – Goff and Lions bring a 6-game winning streak into their prime-time game at Houston
The Detroit Lions are off to their best start since 1956. They will look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they visit the Houston Texans in a prime-time matchup Sunday night. Quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions beat Green Bay last week for their fourth straight road win. The Texans look to regroup after an embarrassing loss to the New York Jets last Thursday. Houston will try to improve its pass protection after C.J. Stroud was sacked a season-high eight times in the loss.

NFL – Bears have back-to-back losses and are at a potential tipping point
The Chicago Bears are at a potential tipping point with back-to-back losses heading into their game against the New England Patriots. Chicago simply can’t afford to stumble against the Patriots in a game featuring quarterbacks drafted with two of the top three picks this year, with the Bears’ Caleb Williams going against Drake Maye. New England is tied with six teams for the NFL’s worst record at 2-7. The Bears delivered a flat performance in a 29-9 loss at Arizona. New England fell 20-17 in overtime at Tennessee last week.

Offensive lineman Carter Smith and defensive lineman C.J. West aren’t fazed by the incredible milestones No. 8 Indiana already has achieved this season. So they’re not paying attention to the long, one-sided history of the Indiana-Michigan series. The Wolverines have won 27 of the 28 meetings, dating to 1988, with the only exception coming during the shortened 2020 COVID-19 season. They could change that legacy in front of a sellout crowd in Bloomington on Saturday. For the Hoosiers, it’s also a chance to keep their perfect record and their playoff hopes intact as they try to become the first team in program history to post a 10-win season.

Coach Marcus Freeman wants No. 10 Notre Dame focused and prepared just like he would any time the Fighting Irish line up against Florida State. And he wants the Fighting Irish to ignore the Seminoles’ five-game losing streak, 1-8 record and the questions surrounding the program. No, this won’t be the marquee matchup it was expected to be when the season started, but for the Irish the importance of this game is simple — they can’t afford another stumble if they want to make the playoffs after appearing 10th in the initial CFP rankings this week.

NCAAHKY – NCAA lifts eligibility ban in allowing CHL players to compete at US colleges
The NCAA Division I Council has cleared the way for players with Canadian Hockey League experience to compete at U.S. colleges starting next season. It is a landmark decision that has the potential of shaking up the NHL’s two largest sources of developmental talent. The decision is effective Aug. 1. CHL players were previously deemed to be professionals because they received a monthly stipend for living expenses. The decision also applies to skiing, bringing both in line with NCAA eligibility rules for other sports.

But outside the highest-profile athletes, who now can earn millions of dollars while still in school, a college degree remains the ultimate prize for many players. But several Division I athletes say the money available to them through NIL remains a small consideration compared with earning a degree and competing in the sports they love.

NASCAR – NASCAR’s championship weekend shrouded in off-track drama
NASCAR heads into its championship weekend locked into a federal antitrust lawsuit with NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Its officiating has been under months-long scrutiny, and this week it issued a wave of hefty fines for alleged race manipulation in the final playoff qualifier. Other than that? Three champions will be crowned starting Friday at Phoenix Raceway. But those national series races have become a sideshow to the off-track drama that has engulfed NASCAR the last several months.
