The suspect charged in a fatal weekend shooting in Eau Claire has been arraigned.

47-year-old Rigoberto Gomez is charged with open murder, assault, and assault with a dangerous weapon. He’s also facing three additional firearm charges. He’s accused of fatally shooting 36-year-old Chad Medlin following an altercation at a bar around 12:45 a.m. Saturday in downtown Eau Claire.

Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit tells us Gomez remains in custody.

The suspect was arrested early that morning,” Heit said. “He has been arraigned today and was given a $1 million bond. So that court case will be continuing, but he is in custody at this time.”

Heit says Chad Medlin was a firefighter for the Pipestone, Berrien Township, Eau Claire Fire Department, and also a coach. The community is reeling after his death.

It’s a tragic situation for the community. He was a volunteer fireman and serving the community, and it’s a tragic loss.”

One other person, 39-year-old Leonardo DeMarco of Eau Claire, was injured in the shooting. He was treated and released at Corewell Health South Hospital in St. Joseph.

Pipestone, Berrien Township, Eau Claire Fire Department Chief Norm Carl said on social media Saturday it was a sad day for the department. He writes, “We lost a friend. A fellow firefighter. Somebody who served his country.” Carl says as the chief of the department, people look to him for answers, but following the shooting, he’s at a loss. Carl says the department will continue to do its job, “but each step will be just a little bit harder.”
