Dodgers 7, Yankees 6 – Dodgers win World Series in 5 games, overcome 5-run deficit to beat Yankees 7-6
The Los Angeles Dodgers won their second World Series championship in five seasons, overcoming a five-run deficit with the help of three Yankees defensive miscues and rallying on sacrifice flies from Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts in the eighth inning to beat New York 7-6 in Game 5. Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo’s RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second and Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning homer against Ryan Brasier built a 5-0 lead for New York. But the Dodgers rallied, helped by a shaky defensive performance by the Yankees. Errors by Judge in center and Anthony Volpe at shortstop, combined with pitcher Gerrit Cole failing to cover first on Betts’ grounder, helped Los Angeles score five unearned runs in the fifth. Of the 234 teams to trail by five or more runs in a Series game, the Dodgers became just the seventh to win.
MLB – Yankees blow 5-run lead with epic defensive meltdown as Dodgers rally to clinch
Just when it appeared Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees were right back in this World Series, they all but handed away the trophy. An epic meltdown of defensive miscues, beginning with Judge’s embarrassing error in center field, helped the Los Angeles Dodgers rally in a five-run fifth inning that tied the score at 5. Young shortstop Anthony Volpe and ace pitcher Gerrit Cole also committed costly mistakes. New York’s bullpen squandered a one-run lead in the eighth, and the Dodgers held on for a 7-6 victory in Game 5 that wrapped up their eighth championship and second in five years. Finally back in their first World Series since 2009, the Yankees didn’t last long.
MLB – Freddie Freeman wins MVP award after tying record with 12 RBIs for Dodgers
When the World Series started, it was hard to figure what Freddie Freeman would be able to provide for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He left no doubt about the MVP winner. Freeman broke records by homering in the first four games and he matched a Fall Classic mark with 12 RBIs to power the Dodgers past the New York Yankees for their second championship in five years. The popular slugger delivered yet again Wednesday night with a two-run single off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole in a five-run fifth inning that helped rally Los Angeles to a clinching 7-6 victory in Game 5. When it was over, Freeman was an easy choice for the Series MVP award.
MLB – White Sox hire Will Venable as manager, AP sources say
The Chicago White Sox have hired Will Venable to take over as manager, turning to the former big league outfielder to help turn around the team after a miserable season. Two people with direct knowledge of the decision confirmed the choice to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the franchise hadn’t announced the move. Venable is stepping in for Pedro Grifol, who was fired in August with the White Sox on their way to breaking the modern major league record for most losses in a season. With Grady Sizemore serving as interim manager, the club finished with a 41-121 record. Venable was an associate manager for Texas for the past two years.

NFL – Police investigate of a traffic stop involving Lions WR Jameson Williams and a gun
Police in Detroit are conducting an internal investigation after Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was not locked up following a traffic stop despite the discovery of a gun under his seat. Commander Michael McGinnis told WXYZ-TV that the police chief was “very unhappy” when he heard details about the Oct. 8 stop. The gun was registered to Williams, but he did not have a permit to carry it in the vehicle. Prosecutors are reviewing the case. Williams’ lawyer noted that the player’s brother, who was driving, has a concealed-carry permit.
NFL – Accountability issues plague the Bears as they regroup to face the Cardinals
Quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears’ offense need to focus on scoring earlier in games before facing the Arizona Cardinals, but before they do that, they had to address the hangover from their loss to Washington on a Hail Mary pass. There are lingering accountability issues for some players as they try to move past the loss on the final play, and coach Matt Eberflus has taken criticism from the public as well as from players. The Bears won’t say whether there is any discipline for Tyrique Stevenson, who made the key mistake on the Hail Mary pass.
NFL – Packers’ QB Love doesn’t practice; says ‘realistic’ chance he plays against Lions
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love didn’t practice Wednesday, but remained hopeful about the possibility of playing Sunday after a strained groin prevented him from finishing a 30-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Love said “I think it’s realistic” regarding the chances he could play Sunday. Love initially got hurt on the first series of the game. He said it happened while rolling out to his right on a third down play. Love remained in the game until he dropped to the ground near the sideline after completing a second down pass to Josh Jacobs early in the third quarter.

NCAAFB – Playoff director says “eye-test” will still be a factor in playoff selection
The executive director of the new 12-team College Football Playoff suggested that while wins and the age-old “eye test” will play a role in determining who makes the bracket, strength of schedule also will be a major factor in the selection committee’s deliberations. The first list of the committee’s weekly top 25 rankings comes out Tuesday, with the brackets to be determined on Dec. 8. The playoffs start on Dec. 20 and the championship game is Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
