There are just two scheduled events before Mackinac Island slows down for the winter months.

A majority of businesses are getting ready to wrap up the summer, but not before Halloween weekend and the Great Turtle Trail Run. Steph Castelein, the managing director at the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, says after that, many shops and resorts will work on upgrades and repairs during the down season and remain open in other ways.

“A lot of them nowadays have online shops and stores,” Castelein said. “So if you want to get your give the gift of Mackinac, we call it, for the holiday season, you can still order fudge year-round. It’s still made here on the island.”

Castelein believes the summer will be on-par with previous seasons with about 1.2 million visitors.
