Cleveland Guardians 7, New York Yankees 5 – 10 Innings                     (NYY leads 2-1)

Guardians 7, Yankees 5 – F/10 – Fry’s 2-run homer in 10th sends Guardians to stunning 7-5 win over Yankees
Pinch-hitter Jhonkensy Noel tied the score with a two-out home run in the ninth inning and David Fry hit a two-run homer in the 10th, rallying Cleveland over the New York Yankees 7-5 and pulling the Guardians to 2-1 in the AL Championship Series. Cleveland led 3-1 in the eighth inning before Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer off All-Star closer Emanuel Clase and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a solo shot. With the Guardians trailing 5-3 and one out from falling into a 3-0 series deficit, Lane Thomas doubled against Luke Weaver in the ninth and Noel tied the score.

Dodgers 10, Mets 2 – Ohtani and Betts lead Dodgers to latest blowout of Mets for 3-1 lead in lopsided NLCS
Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff homer and scored four times, Mookie Betts also went deep and drove in four runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the New York Mets 10-2 for a 3-1 lead in their lopsided National League Championship Series. Betts had a two-run homer and a two-run double among his four hits. Max Muncy extended his streak of reaching base safely to 12 plate appearances, a postseason record, and the Dodgers moved within one win of their 25th pennant — most in NL history. Game 5 is Friday at Citi Field, with Jack Flaherty expected to pitch for Los Angeles with an opportunity to put his hometown team in the World Series.

NFL – National Football League – Week 7
Last Night
Denver Broncos 33, New Orleans Saints 10

Broncos 33, Saints 10 – Sean Payton triumphs in return to New Orleans as the Broncos dominate the Saints, 33-10
Javonte Williams rushed for two touchdowns and the Denver Broncos triumphed in coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans, beating the banged-up and reeling Saints 33-10. Bo Nix passed for 164 yards and ran for 75 yards for Denver. The Broncos outgained New Orleans 389 yards to 271 while sending the Saints to their fifth straight defeat. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler made his second straight start for New Orleans and his lack of experience was exacerbated by injuries all across the the offense. The Saints fell to 2-5, while the Broncos improved to 4-3.

Chicago Bears (Bye week)

NFL – The Lions are rolling on a busy road with the Vikings a step ahead in the NFC North
The last game the Detroit Lions played in Minnesota was a triumphant visit when they used a six-point victory over the Vikings to seal their first division title in 30 years. The Lions will find the Vikings sitting in their seat when they return to U.S. Bank Stadium. They are in the thick of an intense competition for their NFC North crown. The Vikings are coming out of their bye week at 5-0 as the only undefeated team in the NFC. The Lions are 4-1 and five points from being unbeaten. They scored 89 points in their last two games.

NFL – Williams and the Bears roll into their bye with a 4-2 record and 3 straight wins
Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears rolled into their bye week with three straight wins and a 4-2 record. The No. 1 overall draft pick is signaling he just might be the quarterback to solidify a position that has long haunted a founding NFL franchise. The Bears are looking more like a team that’s serious about contending for a playoff spot. The Bears have their best record through six games since the 2020 team was 5-1 on the way to an 8-8 finish, after pounding Jacksonville 35-16 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last week. They matched their longest win streak since Weeks 14 through 16 of that season.

NCAAFB – Illinois eyes 1st ranked-vs-ranked win at home since 1991 against Michigan
Michigan and Illinois will try to get back on track Saturday at Memorial Stadium. No. 24 Michigan had a school-record 27-game Big Ten winning streak snapped Oct. 5 at Washington. The Wolverines also had won 11 straight road games. No. 22 Illinois led a one-win Purdue team 27-3 in the third quarter last week, fell behind in the final minute of regulation, and rallied for a 50-49 overtime victory. The Illini are 11-11-1 in ranked-vs-ranked games at home, but haven’t won one since beating Ohio State in 1991. Illini coach Bret Bielema wants his team’s fans to bring a raucous atmosphere.

NCAAFB – Michigan State tasked with stopping Iowa’s potent rushing game
Michigan State is looking to snap a three-game losing streak Saturday when it hosts Iowa. The Spartans (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) are coming off a bye week after facing Oregon and Ohio State on consecutive weekends. Michigan State struggled on offense and defense in both games and now will face the Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) who were impressive in a 40-16 win last week over Washington. The Spartans are tasked with trying to stop the Hawkeyes who have had more than 200 yards rushing in five of six games. Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson is the nation’s No. 2 rusher with 937 yards and 12 touchdowns.

NCAAFB – Notre Dame defense adjusts to loss of CB Morrison against Georgia Tech
No. 12 Notre Dame is dealing with the loss of one of its top defensive players as it plays at Georgia Tech. The Fighting Irish lost cornerback Benjamin Morrison to a season-ending hip injury in last week’s win over Stanford. Georgia Tech’s ability to take advantage of a young Notre Dame secondary could be hampered by the uncertain status of quarterback Haynes King, who left last week’s win at North Carolina with an apparent right arm or shoulder injury. King’s status may not be known before the game. Zach Pyron would be the likely fill-in starter.

Last Night

Rangers 5, Red Wings 2 – Artemi Panarin has 8th career hat trick, Rangers beat Red Wings 5-2
Artemi Panarin had his eighth career hat trick and the New York Rangers rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Panarin became the first Rangers player to have multiple points in the first four games of a season. He scored twice on the power play. Vincent Trocheck also had a power- play goal and assisted on all of Panarin’s goals. Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in his season debut. Victor Mancini also scored. The Rangers have won the last five meetings, including twice this week. Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher scored for Detroit. Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot was pulled in the second period after allowing five goals.

Blackhawks 4, Sharks 2 – Bertuzzi helps Chicago beat San Jose 4-2 in the Blackhawks’ home opener
Tyler Bertuzzi and Nick Foligno each scored a power-play goal, and Chicago beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 in the Blackhawks’ home opener. Taylor Hall and Jason Dickinson also scored for Chicago. Connor Bedard and Teuvo Teravainen each had two assists. Hall, who missed most of last season because of right knee surgery, put the Blackhawks in front 4:20 into the first period. It was Hall’s first goal since Nov. 5 and No. 267 for his career. Tyler Toffoli and Fabian Zetterlund scored for San Jose, which trailed 3-0 early in the second.

NBA – Leonard won’t play for  Clippers to start the season while rehabbing knee
Kawhi Leonard won’t play for the Los Angeles Clippers to start the season because of ongoing rehabilitation from inflammation in his right knee. That’s according to a report by ESPN, which cites unidentified sources saying that Leonard will be sidelined indefinitely. Leonard hasn’t played during the preseason, which ends Thursday night at home against Sacramento. Leonard is attempting to stabilize his knee to the point where he would be available for potential postseason play.

NCAAMBB – Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring effective immediately
Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring effective immediately. The program said Thursday that Bennett will announce his retirement at a news conference Friday. No reasons were given for Bennett’s abrupt departure less than three weeks before the start of the season. The 55-year-old Bennett led the Cavaliers to the national title in 2019. In his 15 seasons as the coach in Charlottesville, he made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. He just signed an extension in June to keep him in the job through at least 2030.

NCAAVB – Mountain West commissioner heartbroken over turmoil with San Jose State
Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez says she is heartbroken over turmoil surrounding San Jose State volleyball this season. Four teams have canceled games against San Jose State: Boise State, Southern Utah, Utah State and Wyoming. None of the schools explicitly said why. Most Nevada players said they wouldn’t take the floor when the Wolf Pack are scheduled to host the Spartans on Oct. 26 even though the athletic department said it wants to play the match. The school says state law bars forfeiture “for reasons related to gender identity or expression.”
