Checking out the changing leaves in Michigan is a big tourist activity, but the recent dry weather may diminish the fall color.

The dry weather and lack of moisture means leaves will just turn brown, maybe a muted yellow and fall off the trees, according to Michigan State University Extension’s Julie Crick. She says not all is lost, though.

“If we get steady rain, it could make a difference,” Crick said. “But at this point, we want to make sure that the rain is not very strong in that it will sort of pound or shake the leaves off of the trees. And we want to be sure that rain isn’t accompanied with wind because wind will also cause the leaves to drop prematurely.”

Crick says there may still be areas of vibrant colors in Michigan, and she encourages everyone to go on their leaf peeping tours to get out and enjoy what the state has to offer.
