Angels 3, Tigers 0 – Neto homers, rookie Kochanowicz pitches 6 shutout innings and Angels beat Tigers 3-0
Zach Neto homered, rookie Jack Kochanowicz pitched six shutout innings and the Los Angeles Angels ended a seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. Los Angeles had lost 12 of 14 and were 1-8 going into the last game of their road trip. Detroit had won six straight, but left 10 runners on base on Thursday. Kochanowicz was spectacular in his sixth major-league start, allowing five hits in six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. Tigers starter Keider Montero allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in five innings.

Rangers 2, White Sox 1 – Corey Seager hits his 200th career homer as the Rangers beat the lowly White Sox 2-1
Corey Seager hit his 200th career homer and Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven scoreless innings, leading the Texas Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the lowly Chicago White Sox. Eovaldi matched his season high with 10 strikeouts in his second straight win. The right-hander was working on a no-hitter before Gavin Sheets hit a leadoff single in the fifth. Kirby Yates surrendered Andrew Benintendi’s 15th homer with one out in the ninth, and then struck out Andrew Vaughn and retired Sheets on a grounder to second for his 25th save in 26 tries.

CMU 66, CC 10 – Labas, special teams spark Central Michigan to 66-10 romp over Central Connecticut
Joey Labas threw for three touchdowns and 342 yards and completed 75% of his passes and Central Michigan beat Central Connecticut 66-10 in the season opener for both teams. Labas finished 18-for-24 passing overall and did most of his damage before halftime, completing 16 of 20 for 268 yards and two touchdowns and sending the Chippewas to a 42-7 halftime advantage. Myles Bailey opened the scoring by running in from 7 yards out for a 7-0 Central Michigan lead. Elijah Howard knotted it with a 3-yard run, but on the following kickoff, Stephan Bracey ran 87 yards to score and CMU pulled away.

NCAAFB – MSU and new coach Jonathan Smith host Florida Atlantic in the season-opener
Both Michigan State and Florida Atlantic kick off the season Friday hoping to bounce back from 4-8 seasons. Jonathan Smith will debut as the Spartans’ new coach after six seasons leading Oregon State. Michigan State hired Smith to rebuild a program that crumbled under Mel Tucker who was fired last September for off-field issues. Tom Herman begins his second year with the Owls who are aiming for their first winning season since 2020. The only time Florida Atlantic has beaten a Power 4 school was at home in 2007 against Minnesota.

NCAAFB – Sherrone Moore starts new era, leading Michigan against Fresno State
The defending champion and ninth-ranked Michigan Wolverines will have a new coach on the sideline this season, starting a new era after Jim Harbaugh returned to the NFL to lead the Los Angeles Chargers. Sherrone Moore gained some experience in the role in 2023, filling in four times for Harbaugh as he served a suspension early in the year and again at the end of the regular season. The Wolverines will kick off defense of their national title Saturday night at home against Fresno State.

NCAAFB – Mike Elko makes Texas A&M coaching debut as Aggies host Notre Dame
Coach Mike Elko makes his debut with No. 20 Texas A&M on Saturday against No. 7 Notre Dame. He will see a very familiar face. Quarterback Riley Leonard transferred to Notre Dame this offseason after spending three seasons at Duke, with Elko as his coach for the last two. Leonard played just seven games last season due to injuries. But he threw for 2,794 yards and 20 touchdowns while running for 636 yards and 11 more scores in leading Duke to nine wins in 2022.

NCAAFB – Wisconsin opens season by hosting Western Michigan in Friday night matchup
Wisconsin seeks to improve to 16-0 in night games against unranked opponents at Camp Randall Stadium when the Badgers open their season by hosting Western Michigan on Friday. Wisconsin is coming off back-to-back 7-6 seasons and enters a year unranked for the first time since 2016. That 2016 Wisconsin team went 11-3 and capped the year by beating Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl. This marks the first time Wisconsin and Western Michigan have faced each other since that Cotton Bowl matchup. Western Michigan went 4-8 last year and has a new offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator.

NFL – GM Brad Holmes expects Lions to be Super Bowl champs after breakthrough season
Expectations for the Detroit Lions have never been higher. General manager Brad Holmes made it clear on Thursday morning he’s not lowering the bar. He says “for this season? Win the Super Bowl.” For decades, the notion of the Lions raising the Lombardi Trophy in February was laughable. Everything changed last season when Detroit fell one win short of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time, as it gave away a 17-point, third-quarter lead in a 34-31 loss to San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game.

NFL – NFL places limits on Brady’s access because of pending Raiders ownership stake
An NFL spokesperson says Tom Brady’s pending bid to become a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders has triggered restrictions on his access to teams as part of his role as a Fox Sports broadcaster. Brady is not permitted to attend in-person or online broadcast production meetings and may not have access to team facilities, players or coaches. Fox staff is not subject to these limitations. He also must abide by the league constitution and bylaws that prohibit public criticism of officials and other clubs. Brady is allowed to broadcast Raiders games.

WNBA – Clark and Reese record-setting seasons continue to fuel Rookie of the Year debate
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese both have been having history-making rookie seasons on and off the court and their performances continue to fuel debates around the WNBA Rookie of the Year race. The pair came into the league highly touted and haven’t disappointed. Despite their record-setting play, Clark is the favorite to win the league’s rookie of the year award, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Clark is leading the league in assists and Reese is the league’s leading rebounder at 12.9 a game — the highest average in league history by any player.

Tennis – No. 1 seeds Sinner, Swiatek move on; Alcaraz, Osaka eliminated
Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner have flashed their No. 1 form with powerful performances that moved them into the third round of the U.S. Open. Carlos Alcaraz and Naomi Osaka couldn’t quite find the games that once had them on top of the rankings. Swiatek raced by Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara 6-0, 6-1, finishing off the match in 65 minutes. It took the 2022 U.S. Open champion longer than that to play the second set of her first-round match, when she needed a tiebreaker that she eventually closed out in 72 minutes. Sinner downed Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 in 1 hour, 39 minutes.

Golf – Scottie Scheffler takes giant leap toward $25 million FedEx Cup prize
Scottie Scheffler started the Tour Championship with a two-shot lead. He had the best round of the opening day. The math in the FedEx Cup suddenly isn’t all that hard to figure out. The world’s No. 1 player made five birdies over the last seven holes at revamped East Lake for a 65. With the head start, he now leads by seven shots. That’s the largest 18-hole lead as far back as PGA Tour records go. Xander Schauffele spent too much time playing out of the rough and shot 70. He was tied with Collin Morikawa, who shot 66.

FIFA – FIFA aims for perfect pitch at World Cup following field issues at Copa America
The 2026 World Cup is coming to North America with an ambitious plan, expanding the field by 50% and spreading the soccer spectacle over 16 cities in three countries with multiple climates and elevations. FIFA partnered with turf experts at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University to research and develop the best surface for the tournament. When the World Cup begin in less than two years with 48 teams playing 104 matches in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, no one wants the field to be a topic of conversation like it was earlier this summer at the Copa America.
