The Benton Harbor Are Schools Board of Education is considering changes to the district’s cell phone policy.

During the board’s monthly workshop this week, trustees held a discussion on changing the current cell phone policy in the district to limit distractions. In recent years, states and individual schools across the country have banned cell phones in classrooms.

District Superintendent Kelvin Butts said social media has created conflicts between students. He hopes a new policy could limit the damage.

So, how would things work if the district does change its policy?

“During the day, if the parent needs to speak with the child, the child should be called to the office so that there won’t be any distractions in class,” Butts said. “So it’s not to say they can’t get in touch with their parents, or the parents can’t get in touch with them. It’ll just be a streamlined process of going to the office versus a classroom disruption.”

The board also discussed its strategic and superintendent goals.
