Some Michigan students may have a new helper in the classroom this year: A.I.

This school year, Northville Public Schools will be integrating A.I. into the student experience. They’ll learn within the safeguards set up by the teacher inside of a controlled environment.

Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Aaron Baughman says it’s important the technology doesn’t substitute the work of the student.

When you get to the exam, if you’ve done nothing but ask ChatGPT for answers, you’re going to fail,” Baughman said. “So we want to say to them is use the bots we’ve created because they’re going to teach you and guide you through the work so that you can actually do it on your own when the time comes. Because you can use ChatGPT all semester, but when the exam happens, it’s still going to show the reality.”

Baughman says it’s more than just asking the computer questions. It’s about working with the teachers to set up controlled environments that the students use to complete assignments using the new technology.
