A Benton Harbor woman is in the Berrien County Jail after an officer-involved shooting on Saturday.

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says an officer was on patrol around 4:45 a.m. when he came upon a disturbance surrounding a Chevy Malibu in the 400 block of Vineyard.

As the officer approached the crowd, the Malibu took off on Vineyard, turned around, and then accelerated back toward the crowd. Two people were swiped by the vehicle as it stopped and then accelerated toward more bystanders and the officer.

As the Malibu headed toward the officer, he fired at it, hitting the driver in the hand. She has been identified as 18-year-old Elajah Walker. Walker was taken to Corewell Health South for treatment and then lodged in the Berrien County Jail.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by Michigan State Police. The department of public safety says body cam and car camera footage will be released to the public once cleared by the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office.

The origin of the disturbance turned out to be a love triangle.
