It will soon be easier to track tornadoes and wildfires in Michigan.

A company called Climavision is installing upwards of 200 radars across the country, with three that will cover blind-spots in Michigan.

The data collected by the new radars, as Climavision’s Chris Goode says, can be used to help a lot of people when it’s shared with the National Weather Service and local TV stations.

They’re already gaining access to these radars and they’re already able to use them in operations to help mitigate the impacts of tornadoes, but also other types of weather,” Goode said. “Snowsqualls in the winter are a particular type of weather phenomenon that are often missed because of the beam height challenges.”

The first radar will be installed in Toledo next year, followed by another near Saginaw and Midland. A third will be installed in Northwest Michigan near Frankfort in about two and a half years.
