A celebration of life and Masonic funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. A visitation will be held one hour prior, from 1-2 pm, also at the funeral home. Interment will take place privately at Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago, the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation, or Caring Circle. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.

Augie was born on March 23, 1936, one of three children, to Frederick S. Meyer and Rachael A. (Douglas) Meyer in Paragould, Arkansas. He graduated from Isaac Elston High School in Michigan City, IN., in 1954. Augie worked for a bicycle/motorcycle dealer in Michigan City as his first job. From 1955 to 1967 he was employed in the steel industry at U.S. Steel in Gary, IN. In 1967 he began at Whirlpool Corporation at the LaPorte, IN., Division as a motorcycle parts analyst and later worked in the Customer Relations area as a Field Service Representative. In 1975 Augie was relocated to Michigan as an Appliance Technician and went on to be the first consultant on the Whirlpool Technical Assistance Line in 1980. He continued in that position until his retirement in 1991. In later years he enjoyed doing appliance repair jobs for friends and neighbors.

On May 25, 1990, Augie was married in St. Joseph, MI., to the love of his life, Nan Crawford Morris. He and Nan were both affiliated with the Masons prior to their marriage. Augie had become a member of the Coloma Masonic Lodge 162 F&AM in 1980 and of the Lake Shore Lodge 298. Nan’s dad belonged to the Dowagiac Masonic Lodge and Nan was in Rainbow.

Augie was devoted and loyal to the Masons and the Shriners in his membership as a 32nd Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Knight Templar, a member of the Saladin Shrine of Grand Rapids and he served as Potentate of the Saladin Temple of Grand Rapids for the year 2000. He also served as a member, with his wife Nan, of Eastern Star American Chapter 234. Augie committed himself to a great deal of work with these services. He enjoyed being a part of the Berrien County Shrine Club and Mini-Bike Unit in community parades. He volunteered much time and energy in driving children and their parents to and from the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago. Augie found great reward in all the traveling, accompanied by Nan, across the western part of Michigan in his role as Potentate and in the service to families.

Augie was well know in the community for his willingness to help others, for his love of the Masons and Shriners, for his faithfulness to his Christian beliefs, for his big smile and his welcoming personality. He will be greatly missed.

A favorite saying that he lived by was, “to live respected; to die regretted”.

Augie is survived by his wife, Nan Meyer; children, Thomas (Shelley) Sharp of Bismarck, ND, Lori StClair of Valparaiso, IN, and Tanya (Chad) Hatfield of Lansing, MI; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and sister, Martha Bucksbarg of Chesterton, IN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his daughter, Michelle Garrison; brother, Edward Meyer and mother-in-law, Capitola “Cappy” Daron.
