Governor Gretchen Whitmer is vowing to fight any attempt to ban same sex marriage in Michigan. That’s after Republican state Representative Josh Schriver this week announced plans to introduce a resolution calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same sex unions across the country.
Whitmer took to social media to respond Tuesday.
“Hell no,” Whitmer said. “We fought a long, hard fight to win marriage equality, and we will always protect our family, our friends, and neighbors from hateful attacks. No one should be fired from their job or evicted from their home because of who they love or who they are.”
Schriver, of Oxford, says the Supreme Court decision should be reversed because it “is at odds with the sanctity of marriage, the Michigan Constitution and principles upon which the country was established.”
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has also chimed in, challenging Schriver. She says, “Come and get it.”
