A Michigan Senate committee this week heard testimony on a bill to revise sick time mandates set to go into effect in a little more than two weeks.
The Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee heard from several people who say workers deserve paid sick time. Lathrup Village Mayor Kelly Garrett told committee members she knows the importance of earned paid sick leave because she has a son with sickle cell anemia.
“There were days when I had to be by his hospital bed, when I had to be there to administer medication, days when the only thing that mattered was making sure he was okay,” Garrett said. “Because I had paid sick leave, I could be there. I didn’t have to make an impossible choice between my child and my job.”
Lawmakers sponsoring the legislation say tweaks need to be made to its language.
