NFL – Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey, the daughter of George Halas, dies at 102
Virginia McCaskey, who inherited the Chicago Bears from her father, George Halas, but avoided the spotlight during four-plus decades as principal owner, has died. She was 102. McCaskey’s family announced through the team that she died Thursday. She had owned the Bears since her father’s death on Oct. 31, 1983. The family says “she guided the Bears for four decades and based every business decision on what was best for Bears players, coaches, staff and fans.” During her stewardship, the Bears won a Super Bowl in 1986 and lost a second 21 years later.

NFL – Josh Allen wins AP MVP at NFL Honors
Josh Allen beat out two-time winner Lamar Jackson for the Most Valuable Player award in the closest race since Matt Ryan beat out Tom Brady in 2016. Allen, who led Buffalo to a fifth straight AFC East title, got 27 first-place votes to Jackson’s 23 and finished with 383 points. He received 22 second-place votes and one third. Jackson, who led the Ravens to a second straight AFC North championship, got 26 second-place votes and one fourth for a total of 362 points. in other awards, Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell was named coach of the year, over Lions coach Dan Campbell. 

NFL – Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, Eric Allen and Sterling Sharpe make the Hall of Fame
Antonio Gates, Jared Allen, Eric Allen and Sterling Sharpe have been voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the smallest induction class in 20 years following offseason rule changes meant to make it harder to get inducted. Sharpe got in as a seniors candidate and will join younger brother Shannon as the first siblings ever inducted into the Hall. Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning fell short and won’t join older brother Peyton in Canton. The induction will be held August 2.

Hannah Hidalgo scored 24 points and No. 3 Notre Dame handed Stanford the worst defeat of its storied women’s basketball program as the Fighting Irish rolled to a 96-47 victory Thursday night. Notre Dame’s 49-point romp topped the 45-point victory in 1983 (96-51) by Long Beach State that had been Stanford’s worst loss until Thursday’s debacle in South Bend. Stanford’s Nunu Agara, a 6-foot-2 sophomore forward who averages 17.4 points and 8.1 rebounds a game, left the game in the first quarter with an injury. She only played five minutes and did not score. Olivia Miles scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Notre Dame (20-2, 11-0 ACC). Cassandre Prosper and Maddy Westbeld scored 13 points each for Notre Dame. Tess Heal led Stanford (11-11, 3-8 ACC) with 10 points.

All-Star Pascal Siakam scored 33 points and the Indiana Pacers rallied from a 22-point deficit after losing Myles Turner to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 119-112. Bennedict Mathurin added 25 points. He inadvertently struck Turner in the face going for a rebound in the first quarter. Turner got up and then staggered while making his way to the bench. He was being evaluated for a concussion and did not return. He was scoreless in six minutes. James Harden land Norman Powell scored 22 points each to lead six Clippers in double figures. Kawhi Leonard scored 19 points while playing a season-high 34 minutes.

NCAA – NCAA changes transgender policy
The NCAA has changed its participation policy for transgender athletes, limiting competition in women’s sports to athletes assigned female at birth. The change came on day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order intended to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. The NCAA’s revised policy permits athletes assigned male at birth to practice with women’s teams and receive benefits such as medical care while practicing. The policy is effective immediately and applies to all athletes regardless of previous eligibility reviews.

MLB – MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred says some fans concerned over lack of salary cap
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says he is getting emails from fans concerned over the sport’s lack of a salary cap following an offseason spending spree by the Los Angeles Dodgers that sparked increased attention over the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement in December 2027. Manfred says following an owners’ meeting “this is an issue that we need to be vigilant on.” He adds, ”We need to pay attention to it and need to determine whether there are things that can be done to allay those kinds of concerns and make sure we have a competitive and healthy game going forward.”
