Benton Harbor Area Schools is voicing its support for the U.S. Department of Education following recent developments.
During a workshop meeting on Tuesday, the Board of Education highlighted the department’s crucial role in ensuring children receive a quality education. In response to the current situation, BHAS intends to adopt a resolution in support of the department and its contributions to the school system.
Board president Dashuna Robinson discussed the rationale behind this resolution.
“This would be Benton Harbor Area Schools’ direct statement to the U.S. Department of Education to protect some of the anticipated changes that are coming up with the recent switch in our presidential elections,” Robinson says.
The Department of Education is currently facing scrutiny due to President Trump’s executive order that has put several employees on leave as part of an initiative to reduce federal programs and staff. The president stated that this move is intended to shift educational responsibilities back to the states.
The Board of Education is set to vote on and adopt the resolution during their regularly scheduled meeting next week.
