Michigan’s safe gun storage law is almost a year old, but lawmakers say the work to promote it isn’t done.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation that would require schools to provide information on safe storage to parents each October. Bill sponsor state Representative Sharon MacDonell says the most effective way to get information to parents is through their students.

States with firearm storage requirements, like ours, have lower levels of child firearm injuries and deaths than states with no such requirements,” MacDonell said. “So now that Michigan has our safe storage law, we have to get the word out. It’s estimated that over 150,000 children in Michigan live in a home with at least one unsecured firearm. The Safe Homes, Safe Schools legislation aims to bring this figure down to zero.”

Parents can get free gun locks at their local police or sheriffs office.
