Michigan 76, Penn State 72 – Michigan closes game on a 9-0 run for a 76-72 victory over Penn State
Tre Donaldson scored seven of his career-high 21 points during a game-closing 9-0 run and Michigan edged Penn State 76-72. Rubin Jones sank a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 55-47. Penn State had a 70-67 lead with 3:12 remaining before missing its final four shots. Donaldson began his personal 7-0 run with a jumper from the free-throw line and Danny Wolf blocked a Penn State shot in the paint at the other end. Donaldson rattled in a 3-pointer to give Michigan the lead at 74-72 and Ace Baldwin Jr. missed a long 3-pointer for the Nittany Lions. Donaldson grabbed the defensive rebound and made two free throws with 4.3 seconds left for a four-point lead.

Quinton Byfield and Kevil Fiala scored for the Kings, and Darcy Kuemper had 23 saves.

NHL – Lightning’s Emil Lilleberg gets a 2-game suspension for interference penalty
Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Emil Lilleberg has been suspended two games without pay for interference against Detroit Red Wings forward J.T. Compher on Saturday night. Lilleberg received a minor penalty for the incident, which occurred in the second period of the Red Wings’ 2-0 victory. Lilleberg will lose a little more than $9,000 under terms of the CBA.
NHL – Blackhawks GM Davidson thinks help is on the way as teams’ struggles continue
In the middle of another losing season, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson is preaching patience. Chicago is 3-10-3 in its last 16 games after losing 4-2 to Minnesota on Sunday night. At 15-29-5, it is once again among the NHL’s worst teams — in the running for a top-three draft pick for the third consecutive year. Davidson says he is optimistic about the team’s future because of the development of its prospects. Chicago also has nine more selections in the 2025 draft after it reacquired its third-rounder in a three-team trade on Friday.
NFL – Hirings of Glenn and Vrabel give NFL 5 teams with coaches who once played for them
Aaron Glenn had no doubts about where he wanted to go once the New York Jets’ head-coaching job became available. Home sweet NFL home. Once a key player as a first-round draft pick for the franchise, Glenn will lead the Jets from the sideline after interviewing with three other teams in recent weeks. With the recent hirings of Glenn and Mike Vrabel by the New England Patriots, the NFL has five coaches who once played for the teams they’re now leading. They join Houston’s DeMeco Ryans, Detroit’s Dan Campbell and the Los Angeles Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh.
NFL – Chiefs look to join the Lakers, Yankees and Bulls with a rare three-peat
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs accomplished a feat that had never been done before: Getting back to the NFL’s championship game following back-to-back Super Bowl wins. Next up is the rare championship three-peat that hasn’t been accomplished in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball in more than 20 years. The most recent team in those four leagues to win three straight championships was the Los Angeles Lakers with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant in the 2000-02 NBA Finals.

Cavaliers 110, Pistons 91 – Garland scores 22, Mitchell 21 as Cavs end mini slide with 110-91 win over Pistons
Darius Garland scored 22 points, Donovan Mitchell added 21 and the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped a season-high, three-game losing streak with a 110-91 win over the Detroit Pistons. Cleveland ended its mini slump with an 11th straight win over Detroit. The Cavs are 22-3 at home. They also improved to 2-0 against former coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who guided Cleveland into the playoffs the past two seasons. However, Bickerstaff was fired following last year’s postseason exit before being hired by the Pistons. Jarrett Allen had 15 points and Evan Mobley 14 rebounds for Cleveland. Cade Cunningham scored 22 and Malik Beasley 19 to pace Detroit.
Bulls 129, Nuggets 121 – Vucevic helps the Bulls hold off Jokic and the Nuggets for a 129-121 victory
Nikola Vucevic had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and the Chicago Bulls handed the Denver Nuggets their second straight loss with a 129-121 victory. Zach LaVine scored 21 points and Lonzo Ball had 18 for Chicago, which had lost seven of eight. Ayo Dosunmu added 17 points. The Bulls went 24 for 53 from 3-point range and had seven players score in double figures. Denver wasted another impressive performance by Nikola Jokic, who had 33 points, 14 assists and 12 rebounds in his sixth triple-double in his last seven games.
NBA – Jimmy Butler suspended for the 3rd time this month by the Miami Heat
Jimmy Butler was suspended by the Miami Heat. Again. Butler had been expected to play for the Heat against the Orlando Magic on Monday night, after completing his second suspension of the month. But he was suspended for a third time basically just as the second one was ending. He was previously suspended from Miami’s most recent two games after missing a team flight to Milwaukee last week. Butler has missed 15 of Miami’s last 20 games, including 10 of the last 13 because of the suspensions. He is expected to miss at least five more games.
NCAAFB – Penn State hires Ohio State’s Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles
Penn State has lured Jim Knowles away from Ohio State. The Nittany Lions have hired Knowles to serve as their defensive coordinator. Knowles held the same position with the national champion Buckeyes for three years. Knowles replaces Tom Allen, who left to take the same job with Clemson after Penn State fell to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Knowles guided an Ohio State defense that held opponents to 254 yards while going 14-2 on its way to the program’s second national championship of the CFP era.
Spectator is killed by a stray hammer thrown at a Colorado youth track and field meet
A person is dead in Colorado after having been hit by an errant weight thrown by a competitor in a hammer throw event at a youth track and field competition. The accident happened Sunday morning at a Colorado United Track Club meet at the University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs campus. University officials say the weight cleared certified barriers before striking a man who died at the scene. KRDO-TV reports the man apparently tried shielding his wife and son. His identity has not been released. The hammer in the hammer throw is a heavy ball on a chain that the athlete spins around before releasing.
