A Mattawan man has been found guilty of second degree murder and other charges after the death of a Decatur woman in December.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says deputies were called to a home in the 46,000 block of County Road 665 in Waverly Township around 2:45 a.m. on December 23 on a report of a woman that had been hit by a truck. They arrived to learn 33-year-old Gregory Campos had come to the home looking for his girlfriend when he was told she wasn’t there. He then had an argument with the 28-year-old Decatur woman and a 28-year-old Paw Paw man who was present.

Police say Campos then intentionally struck both victims with his truck, leaving the woman mortally injured in the yard. The male victim tried to escape into the home after being hit, and Campos crashed his truck into the home trying to hit him again.

The truck became disabled, and Campos remained at the scene until police arrived. Deputies say at the time of his arrest, Campos admitted to using meth, and they found meth on his person.

The woman later died at a hospital, while the male victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Campos was found guilty at a jury trial on Monday of second degree murder, assault with great bodily harm, operating while intoxicated causing death, and possession of a controlled substance. He’ll be sentenced on March 18.
