The Trump administration on Tuesday issued a surprise order that all federal grants and loans be frozen pending a political review, and that’s got organizations of all kinds nationwide wondering how they’ll be affected.
We reached out to Berrien County to find out what might be coming. County Administrator Brian Dissette told us discussions were taking place among various county departments since the announcement was made by the White House.
Dissette said it’s still very early to know for sure and he can’t say with any certainty how much the county will be affected, but it appears there will be issues with some departments. Specifically, Dissette was expecting any program that relies on Grants.gov for funding to run into problems. For Berrien County, the sheriff’s department, the road department, and the health department were viewed as likely to be affected.
Particular county projects that could be in jeopardy are the Emergency Operations Center being planned at 500 Circle Drive in Buchanan Township, which will rely on a $3 million federal grant, and the recently-approved Buchanan-to-Niles trail that’s dependent on a $4 million RAISE Grant through the feds.
Dissette said the governor’s office also reached out to Berrien County Tuesday to see if it understands the impact the Trump move could have. He stressed it was still too early to say exactly what this will all mean.
We’ve also reached out to Congressmen Tim Walberg and Bill Huizenga for comment, but have not received any.
A federal judge late Tuesday issued a stay on the Trump funding freeze through Monday.
