Some animals at the Detroit Zoo are loving these freezing days.

The zoo was closed for part of this week due to the extreme cold, but that didn’t stop some animals from running around their enclosures and enjoying themselves. Mike Murray, the zoo’s vice president of life sciences, says these are fun days for some animals.

A lot of our animals — like our polar bears, our tigers, and our camels — they feel right at home in any of those temperatures. Today our camels and our tigers and our polar bears are outside as if it was any other day. For our species like giraffes or a lot of our primates like our gorillas and our chimpanzees, we have indoor habitats for them that are conditioned with heated air.”

Murray says animals like the polar bears and grizzly bears eat lots of food when it’s warm outside preparing for extreme cold like this.
