It’s Dry January and there are new warnings about the health effects of alcohol, things that could hurt winemakers in Michigan.
Wine sales usually dip after the holidays and Mike Laing with Mawby sparkling wines says they pick up for Valentine’s Day. He is concerned about a warning that alcohol causes cancer.
“We really think that there is a place for bubbly, for wine,” Laing said. “There has been for centuries, and as anything, we think consumption in moderation.”
Mawby, located in Sutton’s Bay, has started selling a new drink, Safe Sex, that does have less than 1% alcohol in it. Laing says it’s selling well.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this month some studies show drinking three or more drinks that contain alcohol per day increases the risk of stomach and pancreatic cancers.
