Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is running for governor.

The Democrat made the announcement via a campaign video on Wednesday morning. Benson said she knows what Michigan residents go through each day.

I grew up in a middle-class family,” Benson said. “Student loans helped pay for college. Waiting tables helped pay the bills. When my husband, Ryan, deployed to Afghanistan, I brought together Michigan’s military families to support our service members and each other. I know the struggles Michigan families face to find the time and the money to get by.”

Benson said she believes in the state’s future because Michigan created the middle class, put the world on wheels, and never backs down from a fight.

Prior to being elected Secretary of State, Benson was the dean of Wayne State Law School. She joins a race for governor that also includes Republican state Senator Aric Nesbitt and independent Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
