The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan is reflecting on his time in office.

Mark Totten is leaving the position. President Joe Biden nominated him on November 12, 2021. Totten touts his work on crimes against children, violence against women, and gun violence.

Totten has some advice for the incoming U.S. Attorney.

The Department of Justice for decades has played an incredibly important role in sustaining a healthy democracy, in protecting the rule of law,” Totten said. “It’s the kind of work we did when we took on Rick Johnson for public corruption, former Speaker of the Michigan House. And I think a hallmark of the Department of Justice has been operating with independence and impartiality.”

Totten’s resignation is effective January 20 — the day of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
