Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her “Road Ahead” address at the Detroit Auto Show on Wednesday, laying out some of her goals for the next year and a half and reviewing accomplishments of the past couple of years.

The speech was similar to a State of the State, only delivered in front of auto industry leaders and heavily focused on the industry.

With Democrats no longer in total control of the Michigan Legislature, Whitmer extended an olive branch to Republicans, saying both parties can work together on shared goals.

This is my seventh year as governor, but I am still guided by the values I first ran on in 2018,” Whitmer said. “The same values I was taught growing up in a bipartisan household. In the Whitmer house, compromise was a good thing.”

Whitmer even promised to work with incoming President Donald Trump, saying the people of Michigan elected both her and him twice.

Turning to the auto industry, Whitmer said one in five Michigan workers is employed either directly or indirectly in the field. She said it’s vital to keep the auto industry in Michigan.

If the autos succeed, Michigan succeeds, and America succeeds.”

Whitmer said other states, especially in the south, have been wooing away auto manufacturers and suppliers with major incentives. She said Michigan can be targeted and smart about keeping the companies here, putting a new focus on high-tech auto components like batteries.

Whitmer also called for a renewal of the bipartisan job fund, which runs out in a year, and a new plan for fixing the roads now that her Rebuilding Michigan bonding plan is also running out.
