The first official meeting to address tipped wages and sick leave started Tuesday in Lansing.

As of now, February 21 would begin a Supreme Court-mandated phase out of tipped wages in Michigan, something that many want to avert, citing the effects it would have on the hospitality industry.

Knowing there’s a looming deadline, the committee that met Tuesday is chaired by Republican Representative Bill G. Schuette of Midland.

One of my favorite John Wooden quotes is to be quick, but don’t hurry,” Schuette said. “We’re going to make sure we understand that there is a February 21 deadline that’s looming over small businesses in our state. So we’re going to be very efficient and make sure we handle this the right way. We’re not going to rush things either.”

House Bill 4001 and 4002 are looked at as some of the most important issues currently being addressed in front of this new legislature.
