With wildfires still burning in southern California, the Red Cross in Michigan has sent volunteers to help.

Four Michigan volunteers went to California to help with emergency shelters, while another four are working remotely to help reunite families, according to Red Cross Michigan Regional Disaster Officer Latoya Rooks.

Right now, our primary concern is to help ensure that they have a safe place to stay in the immediate,” Rooks said. “Then what we do is we do have volunteers and teammates who support those who have lost their homes on their pathway to recovery.”

Rooks says the volunteers are in California for two weeks but could extend their stay.

About 300 Red Cross disaster workers are helping in southern California.
